Headache Symptom Overview

Headaches involving pain, tension or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck are common in the first trimester of pregnancy. These different headaches are commonly associated with muscle tightness which can be caused by pregnancy hormones as well as fatigue, insomnia, nasal congestion, dehydration, allergies, stress and depression. In order to figure out what is triggering the pain, it is a good idea idea to keep track of them in a journal. The good news is that the frequency of these headaches usually subside by week 13 of pregnancy.

How to Alleviate Headaches During Pregnancy

  • Avoid MSG, nitrates, sulfates, artificial sweeteners, pickled foods, chocolate, aged cheese and cultured dairy products.
  • Avoid loud noise, bright lights and strong smells.
  • Get a massage.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Try yoga or meditation.
  • Make sure you are hydrated by drink water or none caffeinated tea.
  • Get at least 7 hours of sleep per night.
